Why set up an ecommerce coupon campaign?

Discounting is one of the most effective ways to drive sales. It’s the top pricing strategy for retailers across all sectors and works great for boosting your sales figures. If you run an ecommerce Shopify or WooCommerce store, this playbook is for you.

There are several types of discounts your ecommerce business could offer. Percentage discounts, cash discounts, free shipping, etc. An easy way to organize your discount is by using coupon codes. These are popular among consumers and businesses alike, for several reasons:

  • They create shopper loyalty
  • They help bring in new customers
  • They promote newly-launched products and under-used services
  • They encourage first-time product trials

You can use the coupon code as an incentive for users to open a Messenger conversation with you. In this conversation, you can warm people up for a purchase. Or ask them for their email address in exchange for the coupon code.

What's more, you'll have opened up a direct channel for any questions or support. You can jump in at any point if people need to talk about your offer. Remember that customers are 50% more likely to buy from a brand after chatting with them.

Here's a visualized example of an ecommerce coupon campaign workflow in Messenger.

How to set this up in minutes

Step 1. Log into your ShopPop dashboard

Sign in to your ShopPop account, and go to ‘My Campaigns’ to get started. This is where you create new flows and start all of your chat marketing campaigns.

We added a basic ‘Ecommerce Coupon’ template flow in ‘Templates’. This is a framework for you to edit to your liking. Select it and save it to ‘My Campaigns’ to start building your own.

Step 2. Choose your campaign type

There are several ways you can share a flow online and drive traffic to your Messenger channel. These include sharing a direct link, setting up a Comment-to-Messenger campaign, or running ads that drive traffic to Messenger.

Choose a campaign type that best works for your brand or business. For an ecommerce coupon campaign, running an always-on Click-to-Messenger ad is a perfect campaign type. Especially if you're handing out first-purchase discount coupons!

A campaign like this would work wonders combined with a Send to Messenger website widget as the entry point, as well. Here's what that might look like:

Step 3. Write your Messenger flow accordingly

You might need to change your flow depending on which campaign type you're using.

Let’s take the above example of Click-to-Messenger ads. To set this up, you’ll need to go to Facebook Ads Manager and:

  1. Create an Instagram or Facebook post/story
  2. Write the initial response message
  3. Create a button and link it to your ecommerce discount campaign

This means your ecommerce coupon flow should pick up where the button you set up in Ads Manager left off. Bear this in mind when editing your Messenger flow to create a seamless customer journey! Add a component asking for user data like an email address in return for the discount.

Finally, add your discount code to the flow and make sure to link to your Shopify or WooCommerce webshop so people can use the code immediately while your offer is still top of mind.

Step 4. Launch your ecommerce coupon campaign on Messenger

When everything is set up, it’s time to launch your ecommerce coupon campaign. Promote it across platforms for the best results. This means you should consider:

  • Creating an Instagram swipe-up story that links to your flow
  • Adding the flow to your Instagram bio
  • Sharing it in organic Facebook posts
  • Linking to it in your Facebook story
  • Tweeting a link to the flow
  • Linking to it in a Comment-to-Messenger rule
  • Running a Click-to-Messenger ad to the flow

The more people you reach with your campaign, the faster your audience will grow. You can export and use this audience as a seed for Custom/Lookalike Audiences in your future campaigns.

Here's an example of a Click-to-Messenger ad triggering an ecommerce coupon campaign:

If somebody needs help at the end of the flow, you can add a ‘Raise to inbox’ component to make sure you don’t miss the question in your ShopPop inbox:

How you'll benefit from this campaign

An ecommerce coupon campaign is beneficial in several ways. Running one will help your business:

  • Drive more sales
  • Help bring in new customers
  • Gather valuable user data
  • Provide a unique and engaging shopping journey in chat
  • Open a direct channel for support
  • Build a seed audience for your next ad campaign

All of the above will benefit your business as a whole, as well, of course! Start conversations that grow your ecommerce business, now, by linking your online store to the world's most popular messaging app!
